Heather is the owner of Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico and also the leader of our team of massage therapists. Heather graduated from Univ. of California, Santa Cruz, with a B.A. in Environmental Studies in 2000 and thereafter obtained her massage certification through Chico Therapy Wellness Center where she received training in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Acupressure, and Prenatal Massage. Moreover, through her extensive practice as a massage therapist she has acquired additional techniques that allow her to meet each of her client's individualized needs. Heather has a truly unique understanding and feel for the tension experienced by her clients which allows her to modify her techniques to suit their needs in any given session.

Elizabeth Anastasi is a certified massage therapist and a licensed esthetician. She has a B.S. Degree in Communications from Northeastern University and has been active in yoga for many years. She received her massage training at Chico Therapy Wellness Center and has been performing massages in Chico for over 11 years and her clients frequently marvel that one so petite can have such strong hands. She is trained in swedish, deep tissue, sports therapy, and lymphatic drainage and has acquired a variety of techniques that allow her to provide a truly unique massage experience tailored to each client's needs.
As an esthetician, Elizabeth's focus is on anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. She is also exceptional at body waxing, including brazilians. As a massage therapist and an esthetician, she strives to inspire her clients with a sense of youth, wellness, vibrancy, and peace.

Kristen is a Massage Therapist and an Esthetician. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Chico State University, her massage certification from Chico Therapy Wellness Center, and her Esthetician license through Marinello. As an Massage Therapist, she is certified in Swedish massage, prenatal, hot stone, and deep tissue massage. Also, Kristen has developed her own techniques for alleviating migraines and clients with migraine and headache issues have obtained substantial relief from the massage received from Kristen.
Kristen emphasizes that the needs and expectations of her clients are paramount. With each client she takes the time to consult with them concerning issues they are experiencing and their expectations for their session. For Kristen each client is truly a unique individual and each session should be designed to meet the individual's needs.

Serenity has been practicing since her graduation from Phillips School of Massage in Nevada City, California in 2004, and has been providing massage in Chico for years. Her studies included Shiatsu, Acupressure, Reflexology, Fascia Release, Swedish, Orthobionomy, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, Energy Balancing, Anatomy, Quality-of-Touch, and Child Massage.
Serenity's years of yoga practice, beginning in '98 and including two years of Qigong/Tai Chi Chuan, have assisted her appreciation of the art and value of proper alignment and energy balancing and she incorporates this into her practice as a massage therapist. She has also obtained extensive training through contacts with other experienced massage therapists, allowing her to incorporate techniques associated with Tai Yoga, Hot Stone, RainForest, Tui Na, and Lomi Lomi into her practice as a massage therapist. Serenity works very intuitively, is an exceptional listener, and encourages all her clients to feel relaxed and speak openly about their needs.

Sandra is a licensed Esthetician. She received her training at Skyway Beauty and Barbering Academy and has also attended undergraduate classes at the International Dermal Institute in Sacramento. Sandra's emphasis is on improving the health of the skin through natural products and processes so as to allow each client's youthful glow to emerge while educating her clients on the importance of skin care and hair removal. Sandra has extensive waxing experience and has performed a wide variety of waxings on all different types of skin.
Sandra understands the personal nature of hair removal and encourages her clients to ask any and all questions which will help them to feel comfortable, confident, and relaxed prior to receiving any waxing treatment.

Chris Comisari is a graduate of The Advanced School of Massage Therapy in Thousand Oaks, California, where he received training in deep tissue massage, lomi lomi, sports massage, hot stone, and Swedish massage. Chris' knowledge of anatomy and its application to massage therapy has been enhanced a great deal through his work as a physical therapist aide for four years, as well as his continuing work on his B.S. degree in exercise physiology at California State University, Chico.
Like all of Cloud 9's therapists, Chris understands that massage is truly a healing art and he finds great satisfaction in seeing the benefits his clients receive from massage, whether it be emotional or stress relief, reduction of muscle soreness and pain, or simply letting go of a difficult day and obtaining deep relaxation for an hour or two.

Dana is a Licensed Esthetician and a Cosmotologist. She received her Esthetician training from Marinello School of Beauty in Chico. Prior to moving to California, Dana was a licensed Cosmotologist in Missouri, so she is exceptionally experienced in the beauty industry. Dana considers it a privilege to provide facial and waxing services to her clients and enjoys the art and science of selecting the best products for each client's needs and personal concerns. With 4 years of waxing experience, she is exceptional at making clients feel comfortable with the process of hair removal.
In addition to providing skin care services, Dana maintains the reception desk at Cloud 9 Day Spa insuring all clients feel welcome, comfortable, and happy with their services at Cloud 9 Day Spa.

Brooke received her massage certification (1000 hours) through the Nevada School of Massage Therapy in 2001 and has been working as a massage therapist for more than a decade. Prior to moving to Chico, California, Brooke worked as a massage therapist at the prestigious Adam Broderick Salon & Spa in Ridgefield, Connecticut. She is certified in Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, and hot stone massage.
While Brooke has an amazing intuitive feel for her clients' physical needs, she strives always to insure that the clients concerns are understood and their massage goals are met, adjusting each session to adapt to her clients' unique needs arising at that particular moment in their life.

Brazilian Waxing
Preparation for Your Cloud 9 Brazilian
Although all hair removal involves some degree of discomfort, clients generally tolerate Brazilians without too much difficulty. Hair growth can be compared to that of plants or trees in that the roots grow thicker and deeper with time. Consequently, if you have never had a Brazilian the first time will be the most difficult, while subsequent regular appointments will be much easier as the roots of the new hairs will be thinner and finer.
However, do not let this keep you from getting your first Brazilian at Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico as there are numerous ways to reduce the likelihood of pain or discomfort on your first visit. Elizabeth, our lead esthetician regarding brazilians, emphasizes that it is very important that clients follow these guidelines :
First , we strongly recommend that our clients take ibuprofen approximately one hour prior to their appointment. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and will reduce the occurance of any swelling following your wax while also reducing any discomfort during your procedure.
Second , it is important that you do not bathe, shower, "hot-tub", or take a sauna for several hours prior to your appointment . All of these soften the skin making it more likely that the skin will lift and be pulled up when you are waxed (this is true of any waxing, but particularly true for Brazilians because the skin is so sensitive).
Third , it is best to avoid tanning for several days prior to your appointment, and that you not be sunburned in any way at the time of your appointment. You should also avoid tanning for several days after your appointment as waxing will make the skin more sensitive to sunlight for a few days.
Fourth , it is extremely important that you are trimmed, but not completely shaved, prior to your Brazilian. Preferably the length of the pubic hairs should be 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch at the time of your appointment. This is the optimum length for the wax to effectively remove the hairs.
Fifth , our Esthetician will apply a mild numbing solution to the area to be waxed which will reduce any discomfort you could experience during your Brazilian wax.
It is important that you have the procedure re-done every 3 to 6 weeks and that you do not shave the pubic hairs between treatments. As indicated above, the longer the hairs are allowed to grow the thicker the roots become, which increases the discomfort from Brazilian waxing. A Brazilian wax involves the removal of all of the hair in and around pubic region with the use of wax, sometimes leaving a small strip if desired by the client. At Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico we use a low temperature stripless hard wax, considered one of the best waxes in the business for Brazilians. Although this wax is more expensive than hard waxes used by many other Chico day spas, we have found that it is much more comfortable to the client and often removes all of the hairs without the need of waxing the same area more than once. We also use the most hygienic procedures to insure the safety of all our Brazilian waxing clients.

Purchasing, Policies, and Limitations
Purchasing Gift Certificates. Gift Certificates are available for all of our regular prices and specials and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or directly at Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico. Gift certificates are transferable, but cannot be traded back in for cash value. We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards, except American Express.
Gift Certificates for Member Special, Monday Madness, and Sunday Funday. If a gift certificate is purchased for the Member Special, Monday Madness, or Sunday Funday prices, the certificate must be redeemed at the days and times applicable to those specials to receive the intended service. For example, if a "member special" gift certificate for a 1 hour massage is purchased it must be used from Monday through Thursday, between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., or anytime that we are open on Friday, and the recipient must be a member. If a Monday Madness Gift Certificate is purchased for a non-member, it must be used on Monday between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. If a gift certificate is purchased at the Sunday Funday price, it must be used on Sunday to receive the Sunday Funday price for the intended service.
Gift Certificates for Monthly Specials. Gift Certificates purchased for Monthly Special prices may be redeemed at any time, but can only be purchased during the month specified.
GENERAL POLICIES REGARDING GIFT CERTIFICATES
Gift Certificates for Cash Value and Spa Packages . All gift certificates may be used for their cash value to be applied towards the purchase of some other service. If a spa package is purchased with a gift certificate, the services within the spa package can be used separately but the "package price" will no longer apply. The cash value will then be applied to services as if sold separately at the time the service is received.
No Shows and Cancellations . In the event that a client has scheduled an appointment and fails to show or gives less than four (4) hours notice of their desire to cancel the appointment, then the client may be charged. If the client intended to use a gift certificate, the certificate will be considered as having been used due to the no show.
Tips and Gift Certificates . Gift Certificate purchasers sometimes include a tip on the gift certificate. Where a gift certificate designates a tip amount, this amount must be applied towards the tip, not towards cash value of some other service. If the certificate does not designate a tip, the cash value cannot be applied towards a tip. Excess balances on any gift certificate may be applied towards the purchase of other future services at Cloud 9 Day Spa.

Consequently, we decided to add this page to provide some general information about the value of facials, the process of recieving a facial at Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico, and detailed descriptions of each facial we offer at Cloud 9 Day Spa.

Receiving facials on a regular basis can lead to a smoother, brighter appearance of the skin. And specialized treatments combined with facial massage aid in both relaxing facial muscles and stimulating the skin’s cell turnover rate to minimize fine lines, reducing puffiness and preventing or perking up a saggy appearance. The antioxidants in our products help neutralize free radicals, aiding the removal of pollutants from the body. Aromatherapy oil used during facials helps to relax the body, clear the skin of congestion, eliminate toxins, and rejuvenate the skin.
While regular facials are crucial to improving skin balance and removal of impurities, it is also extremely important to have a regular daily skin routine to supplement and enhance the benefits you will receive from regular facials. Our highly qualified and helpful estheticians will be happy to assist and inform you about how you can implement a daily routine to protect and enhance your youthful glow.

It is so rare in fact, that if you have never had a facial, you probably do not even realize how starved your face is for human touch. At Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico, we consider all of our facials to be much needed affection for your
face. Consequently, the first benefit you will receive from your facial is the gift of touch, but from that touch many more benefits will flow, including improved circulation, tone, lymphatic flow (which assists in removing impurities from the skin), and of course, relaxation.
The Cloud 9 Classic Facial
Our Classic facial, often called a European facial, is the most common facial offered at day spas and involves a seven step process:
* Skin Analysis - All of our estheticians have been trained in the analysis of different types of skin and each uses this analysis to adjust the Yum Gourmet products used in your Cloud 9 Classic Facial to take into account your unique issues, such as overly oily or dry skin, or sensitive skin.
* Cleansing - First your esthetician will apply a gentle cleasing solution to remove facial impurities and make-up. It is not necessary for you to come in without makeup, or to wash your face prior to a facial.
* Exfoliate - Once your skin is cleansed, your esthetician will apply an exfoliation products to slough away any dead skin cells, revealing the softer, smother skin beneath. At Cloud 9 Spa we use only botanically based vegan certified products to insure that all aspects of your facial, are safe and healthy.
* Steam and Extractions - Steam is applied during your facial to encourage the opening of pores that will allow the products to penetrate more easily, and ease the process of extractions, if necessary. Extractions involve the gentle removal of debris, such as blackheads, from clogged pores, eliminating small blemishes and encouraging clearer and smoother skin.
* Massage - Face, neck and shoulder massage is also applied during your facial to promote relaxation, blood circulation, and improvement of facial tone leading to younger looking skin.
* Mask - A mask is applied to the skin to increase hydration, draw out impurities, promote collagen production, calm environmentally stressed skin and boost anti-aging treatments.
* Moisturize - Lastly, a moisturizer specifically chosen for your face type and skin issues is applied to target specific areas of concern and to lock in the skin's own natural moisture.

The Purifying Facial
Our Purifying Facial is designed to deal specifically with problem areas that arise from oily skin. Oily skin, or the excessive production of sebum, generally arises from a combination of genetic, hormonal, and seasonal changes, that creates an appearance of thicker skin, often with larger than normal pores and sometimes combined with a shiny appearance. This excessive oil combined with larger pores attracts dirt and bacteria frequently causing skin problems such as acne, whiteheads, and blackheads. Consequently, extra attention beyond the Cloud 9 Classic Facial is recommended to ameliorate these problems.
At Cloud 9 Day Spa, our Purifying Facial is designed to thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate the skin, we then add botanicals and extracts specifically engineered by Yum Gourmet Skincare to calm and balance oily skin reducing the negative impact of an overabundance of sebum. Our Estheticians will also be happy to discuss with you a daily skin care routine that will further enhance the benefits of your occasional Purifying Facial to create the optimal balance for oily skin.
The Age Defying Facial
As we age, deficiencies relating to the intracellar matrix of the skin combine with the reduction of sebum causing our skin to become dry, dull, tight, and itchy, increasing fine facial lines and creating deeper wrinkles that we all associate with aging. Over time this process becomes more advanced causing skin to lose both elasticity and softness. This aging process also harms the skins ability to respond to the elements, whether it be the sun's rays, or pollution, increasing blemishes and creating age spots with time.
The Age Defying facial created by Yüm Gourmet Skincare and offered at Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico contains premium ingredients designed to resist the visible signs of aging and dryness by compensating for these changes by increasing moisture and targeting vitamin deficiencies associated with age. This facial also provides much needed minerals and humectants to further aid the restoration of balance to the skin needed to fend off the aging process. The BT-Microcurrent Facial
Our Micro-current BT-Facial uses Bio-Therapeutic Micro-current equipment and facial products specificially designed for use with the Bio-Therapeutic
• re-educating muscles,
• increasing blood circulation and lymphatic flow,
• enhancing the penetration of facial skin care products into the skin,
• increasing the production of collagen and elastin, enhancing softness,
• increasing protein synthesis, gluconeogenesis and cell membrane transport,

Microcurrent in aesthetics is often described as “facial toning or non surgical face lifting” due to the dramatic lifting effect that micro-current has on facial muscles and facial contours.

The Express Facial
Our Cloud 9 Express facial is a great option if you are short on time (just 30 minutes long) or just want to improve your skin's appearance for an evening or special event. The express facial is similar to the Cloud 9 Classic, though the massage provided is less extensive. However, it is a great pick up for the skin and if added to one of our massages, it is just $40 more (regularly $45).

Your Arrival at Cloud 9 Day Spa
If you have never visited us before, you will be asked to fill out a short intake form that will help us to provide you with the best service possible and you will be introduced to the massage therapist who will provide you with your treatment.
The intake form is then provided to your therapist. Generally, upon reviewing the form, your therapist will lead you into one of our relaxing treatment rooms and ask any questions that they believe are important to providing you with the highest quality service. Such questions may include the nature of any injuries or soreness you have that relate to your massage treatment, your preferences with regard to firmness of pressure, and your goals for you massage treatment. You may also be asked about any areas of sensitivity that you may have. Please do not hesitate to provide this information. The sole purpose of our therapists' questions is to provide you with the best massage or treatment possible.
Treatment Rooms and Your Massage
Our Chico day spa and treatment rooms are designed for comfort, relaxation, and peace of mind. Each contains a comfortable chair, a place to lay your belongings, and a comfortable massage table, dressed with a table warmer, soft clean linens, and a blanket. Once your therapist understands your goals, he or she will leave the room to allow you privacy while you disrobe and get comfortable on the massage table beneath the top sheet and blanket. Most clients prefer to disrobe completely when receiveing a full-body massage but others prefer to remain partially clothed. Your comfort is essential and we encourage you to do what best fits your needs and comfort level. Your massage therapist will provide you ample time to complete this process and knock politely before entering to confirm that you are ready for the session to begin. Throughout your massage your body will be draped with the topsheet and your therapist will only uncover that portion of your body that is being worked upon. If at any time you are uncomfortable it is essential that you inform your therapist so your individual modesty may be respected. When your session is complete, your therapist will advise you to take your time in getting up and getting dressed as the transition from a massage back to the real world is best when it occurs slowly.

As owner of Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico, a massage therapist, and mother to a young infant, Heather Bonea is well aware of the benefits that flow from prenatal massage to both an expecting mother and her unborn infant. A recent article published by the American Pregnancy Organization discussed several studies supporting those benefits,
including stress relief, improved circulation, hormone regulation, reduced swelling, and decreased sciatica pain, all arising from prenatal massage. As stated in the article:
"Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health....
"Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered, leading to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health, when massage therapy was introduced to women’s prenatal care. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (“stress hormones”) were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression). These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence points strongly to maternal and newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care....
"Edema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system..... Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles."
Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico has four massage therapists certified in prenatal massage. Unlike most day spas in Chico we never charge more for prenatal services and we encourage all our competing Chico day spas to follow suit. The benefits to the mothers in Chico and their unborn infants are simply too important to place more limitations on who can afford a prenatal massage and we would rather have more mothers receiving those benefits than less.
Deep Tissue Massage
One of the more frequent questions we receive at Cloud 9 in Chico concerns the difference between a deep tissue massage and our classic massage which is primarily Swedish in nature. The difference is primarily associated with the techniques used by therapists during the massage. With a Swedish massage the therapist uses longer flowing strokes that relax the superficial layers of muscle tissue. Make no mistake, however, that our therapist provide a very firm Swedish massage and often clients find that a firm Swedish massage at Cloud 9 is better than a deep tissue massage elsewhere.
Nonetheless, with a deep tissue massage, your therapist first warms up the body, usually with Swedish techniques, then begins applying slower and much firmer pressure, often using forearms and elbows to reach the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Because it is necessary to warm up the body prior to applying deep tissue techniques (otherwise injury could result), it is essentially impossible to do a full body deep tissue massage in an hour. Consequently, a one hour deep tissue massage at Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico involves the application of deep tissue techniques to two or three problem areas that the client feels need extra deep work, not the entire body. If you are wanting a full body deep tissue massage, then it will require an hour and a half.
All of our deep tissue massages are done by therapist who have received special training in the application of deep tissue massage and are certified to do it properly. However, it is not uncommon for bruises to appear following a deep tissue massage, which is why we always recommend a detox bath (we provide our clients with the appropriate recipe) which will help to pull out the toxins released through your deep tissue massage.
Hot Stone Massage at Cloud 9
Day Spa in Chico
Hot Stone Massage involves the use of heated basalt rocks applied with massage lotion or oil to reach the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Because the stones are heated, which assists in warming the body more quickly and allowing access to deeper layers of muscle tissue, the hot stone massage is often used as an alternative to deep tissue massage.
At Cloud 9 Day Spa in Chico we offer a 75 minute full body hot stone massage ($95), which can be extended to whatever time the client prefers based on a prorated hourly rate. During this massage the therapist utilizes basalt stones of varying sizes throughout the massage to induce deep full body relaxation.
Hot Stone Add-on. We also offer a hot stone add-on ($15) to our one hour full body massage for those clients who would like to experience the effects of hot stone in two to three areas of the body that are needing deeper work. Although the hot stone add-on uses fewer stones and is not applied to the entire body, it is a great alternative if you are on a budget or pressed for time. Please mention your desire for the hot stone add-on at the time of booking so we can be properly prepared and assign you one of our certified hot stone therapists.
